In the 1980s, organic wines still led a niche existence and it took a lot of enthusiasm to deal more closely with the topic. Luckily those times are over. With decades of experience and a lot of know-how, organic winemakers today regularly produce some of the highest rated wines in the world. Reason enough for ViniGrandi to regularly present you with current highlights from our large organic range.
An overview of the most important information about organic wines
Only those vine products that come from organic-biological cultivation and in which certain fertilizers and cellar management methods are deliberately avoided may be called organic wines. This ensures the long-term health and fertility of the soil.
The most important differences to conventional integrated viticulture are the renunciation of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, phosphorus fertilizers and synthetic pesticides and herbicides. Genetically modified yeasts are also forbidden in wine cellars and the sulfur content of the wine is limited.
Organic viticulture is regulated, among other things, by the EC Organic Regulation 2092/91 and the EU Organic Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007. Certified winegrowers have to adhere to strict guidelines and subject their floors to regular inspections in order to be allowed to use the European organic seal for wines. The later processing of the grapes in the wine cellar is also regulated in the specifications.
Why organic wines?
The main goal of organic viticulture is to produce wines that are free from pesticides and other chemical additives. It is not only about protecting the consumer, but above all about ensuring the long-term health and fertility of the soil and upgrading it to an intact ecosystem that naturally promotes the resilience of the vines.
Important measures are a regular spade diagnosis, greening management that is based on the respective soil and vine needs, the regular application of organic or mineral fertilizers and the closure of material cycles. Intensive foliage care is also practiced in order to keep the leaf canopy of the vines airy and to ensure optimal protection against environmental influences and pests.
In this context, organic viticulture should also contribute to the preservation of biodiversity in order to mitigate monocultures of the vine and to favor beneficial insects. For this purpose, among other things, herbicides are not used, which makes it easier to combat pests such as grape berry moths and bean spider mites.
Organic wine is also something special from the point of view of taste. The less chemical sprays have been added to the soil, the more clearly the flavor of the site (terroir) can unfold.
