Le Macchiole, Strada Provinciale 16B Bolgherese 189/A, 57022 Castagneto Carducci (Livorno), Italy
The Italian winery Le Macchiole is located in the middle of sunny Tuscany. Although it is still a comparatively young winery, the wines have already made a good name for themselves. The focus is on ecological viticulture. The winegrowers of the Le Macchiole winery are working intensively on operating the entire estate as part of biodynamic agriculture.
A look back: The history of the Le Macchiole winery
The history of the Le Macchiole winery began in 1983. It was founded by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli, who from the very beginning pursued the ambitious goal of in to grow the less common grape varieties in their region. The winegrowers then used the 90s to experiment and also made the decisions for the future of the winery during this time.
After thoroughly analyzing their land, the winegrowers planted their vineyards very densely. They also made the bold decision to only produce varietal wines. Since the sudden death of Eugenio Campolmi, responsibility for the winery now rests solely with his widow, Cinzia Merli. She affectionately refers to her wines as her children. The oenologist is Luca d'Attoma and the annual production is 150,000 bottles.
The wines from the Le Macchiole winery
According to this cultivation method, the winegrowers of the Le Macchiole winery produced the Messorio from 100% Merlot, which is now Le Macchiole's flagship wine. The Scrio, made from 100% Syrah grapes, is also highly regarded. Also worth mentioning is the Paleo Rosso, which caused a sensation as the first wine made entirely from Cabernet Frank grapes. The varietal plants only reach the market after one year of bottle maturity.
