Castello del Terriccio s.r.l., Via Bagnoli 16, Località Terriccio - Castellina Marittima (PI), Italy
The Castello del Terriccio winery in Tuscany can look back on a long, eventful history. It was founded in 1921 and covers more than 1500 hectares of land and 65 hectares of vineyards. Under the oenologist Carlo Ferrini, over 200,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. The exclusive red and white wines from Castello del Terriccio achieve the best ratings among wine lovers.
The history of the Castello del Terriccio winery
The stately estate of Castello del Terriccio is located in the north of Bolgheri. The large wine-growing area also includes a stud farm. The owner of the property is the former sports rider Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri, who today combines his two passions for horse breeding and viticulture on this piece of land.
The scenic conditions of the winery in Tuscany
The winery is located on the north-eastern edge of the Maremma in a hilly country. This is where the coast separates from the hinterland. The soils on which the vines grow are a mixture of sand and hill rocks. These are red earth soils with a high proportion of copper, iron and magnesium. Due to an excellent microclimate, the vines are spared from the big autumn storms in Tuscany. These storms already lose their strength in central Tuscany, so that the vines can grow undisturbed here all year round.
Another advantage of the sheltered location of this winery: Eucalyptus trees grow all around, protecting the grapes from the winds . At the same time, these trees give the vines special scents and aromas, which are a central feature of the wines of this winery.
The Castello del Terriccio winery and its philosophy
The Castello del Terriccio is one of the largest agricultural estates in Tuscany. The facts at a glance.
- Total area: 1500 hectares
- 65 hectares of vineyards
- 40 Hectares of olive groves
Carlo Ferrini has been the winery's oenologist since 1993. He has made a significant contribution to the fact that the wines of the estate now enjoy international recognition. An essential building block in the corporate philosophy is that more attention is paid to quality than to quantity. On the contrary, the quantities are not increased in favor of an uncompromising demand for the quality of the products. This is the only way to create the best Bordeaux blends at this location.
The special harvesting process of the winery from Tuscany
Each vine has a yield of less than 900 grams per vine. These yields are harvested by hand in a total of three passes and then introduced into a fermentation process. Fermentation is followed by a very intense post-fermentation maceration period with the aim of improving extraction. This winemaking process regularly gets the top marks of three glasses at the Gambero Rosso.
The wines of the Castello del Terriccio
The Winery Castello del Terriccio creates two of the greatest red wines.
-
Lupicaia
This red wine has been an integral part of the range and is celebrated by the wine world as an exceptional product. The grapes come from the vineyard of the same name, which is surrounded by eucalyptus trees. These trees give the wine its typical balsamic note. The wine is aged in oak barrels. Around 30,000 bottles are produced each year.
-
Castello del Terricio
The red wine that is allowed to bear the same name as the winery was bottled for the first time in 2000. He has already won several national and international awards. For the most part, the Castello del Terricio is made from Syrah grapes and matured in 500 liter oak barrels.
