Montevertine is a renowned winery located in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, in the Radda in Chianti region. Founded in 1967 by Sergio Manetti, the estate originally served as a countryside retreat but soon became a dedicated wine-producing property. Manetti, a steel manufacturer, planted Sangiovese vines and quickly realized the estate's potential for producing high-quality wines.
Traditional winemaking as the key to Montevertine's success.
Unlike many producers in Chianti at the time, Montevertine chose to focus on pure Sangiovese rather than following the region’s blending regulations. This decision led to the creation of Le Pergole Torte, one of Italy’s most famous 100% Sangiovese wines, first released in 1977. The estate also produces Montevertine Rosso and Pian del Ciampolo, both highlighting the elegance and structure of Sangiovese.
Montevertine's vineyards are situated at an elevation of around 425 meters, benefiting from cool breezes and limestone-rich soils, which contribute to the wines' finesse and longevity. Traditional winemaking methods are employed, including fermentation in cement tanks and aging in large Slavonian oak barrels. The estate avoids modern techniques like barriques, allowing the wines to express their natural character.
After Sergio Manetti’s passing in 2000, his son Martino took over, continuing the legacy of producing pure and expressive Tuscan wines. Montevertine remains independent and family-run, preserving the vision and passion that defined its early years. The wines are celebrated for their balance, complexity, and ability to age beautifully over decades.
Montevertine has gained a cult following among wine enthusiasts, with Le Pergole Torte recognized as a benchmark for Sangiovese. The estate’s dedication to quality and tradition sets it apart from many commercialized Chianti producers. Today, Montevertine is regarded as one of Tuscany’s most iconic and respected wineries, embodying the soul of Sangiovese with every bottle.
